Driftwood Layout Inspiration

I am anxiously awaiting the release of our new Magazine, Papers and Pixels! Only 5 more days before everyone will get their own copy! It's been a lot of work and a lot of fun and I know I am looking forward to the months to come. We have so many wonderful projects lined up for you and just in time for the holiday seasons as well.

Today I had a little break from working on the magazine as it is now in the capable hands of my dear friend, Miss Chris a/k/a Eagle Eye, who is studying every single word to make sure all is right! So I took a little stroll to one of my very favorite websites - Digital Design Den. I'm always inspired as I look through the gallery, there are so many talented members uploading into the Den Gallery.

This one really caught my eye. Honest I didn't know at first it was created with my new scrapbook kit, Driftwood - honest! LOL

This is created by my long time and very dear friend, Kathy. Many of you know her as KathyJ. I just fell in love with this layout. It is a perfect photograph and so beautifully displayed. I always love Kathy's little touches, like stitching and little tags hanging from different places. It's so pretty. I've asked her to send me a nice high resolution of it. This would look so good framed and hanging on my wall!

I created a layout of Icee for the Sketch Challenge that I hostess at Digital Design Den. I made my own papers and elements for the sketch so the colors would look good with my photographs. Here is the layout.

Thank you everyone who left such lovely comments on my page. Sandy, Grace and Andrea left some comments there with little hints towards a new kit. Honestly I wasn't ever planning to create a kit from this layout, but after that, how could I not???

All inspired and ready to create, I used these colors and other neutral colors in an effort to create some lovely textured papers and elements that could be used for so many types of photos. Perfect for nature shots, animals, masculine and so much more, here is

I was so excited when Steve designed and created this heart shape for my Shadow Box Collection. I wanted to create a birthday card for my brother with this great photo my Mom took when we were little.

The expression on his face is priceless! It was so easy to make using the templates. I hope you'll give it a try and let me know how your card turns out!

Digital Design Den Challenge - Mix and Match

I just had to share this fun challenge that is running right now at Digital Design Den. You add your birth dates and age to come up with numbers that identify certain things you must have in your layout. I came out with a layout about a birthstone, use a one word title, use bling and patterned paper. Whew! It was so much fun. Here is what I came up with:

The journaling reads:
I remember laughing and kidding with my Mom when she gave me my first birthstone necklace. Mom,

I don’t like that color, couldn’t I be born in September - so I could have a sapphire? She used to laugh
and say what a beautiful stone Peridot is. I’m not even sure I ever appreciated the beauty, the lore or the history of Peridot until I got older.

Peridot is the gem of spirit and expression. It is thought to bring the wearer good luck, peace, and success. Its powers include health, protection, and sleep. The advantages of peridot are to attract love and calm anger while also soothing nerves and preventing negative emotions.

Peridot mining was traditionally done at night when the stone’s natural glow is easier to see, the ancient Egyptians even believed that peridots became invisible under the sun’s rays.

Pirate’s believed peridot had the power to drive away evil spirits (and the night’s terrors), especially if set in gold. But as protection from evil spirits it must be pierced, strung on donkey hair and worn on the left arm.
I like that part! So now, I embrace the beautiful Peridot although I don’t have one single piece of jewelry with peridot. That’s a hint for my husband!

Card Class July

I'm getting ready for our Card Class this morning. I sure do look forward to having everyone get together and create. We have such fun. I just wanted to share the cards we are making this morning.

Black Magic

Brayered Backgrounds

This technique is called BLACK MAGIC. It's very simple and yields such bright and beautiful results. You can use any solid stamp. Stamp with Craft White Ink, let dry, and color with water color pencils. Outline some of the flowers, stems and such with a white gel pen. You can also add dots and swirlies with the gel pen. Complete instructions and sizes are available in pdf form by clicking on here on Black Magic.

COLORING AND EMBOSSING VELLUM is fun and creates a soft, romantic look. Stamp your open type image with Stazon on cardstock Vellum. Turn the vellum over and color the design with markers. Remember to color on the oppposite side that you stamped. Run the vellum through the Big Shot using one of the embossing folders. It creates a unique and beautiful look. The BRAYERED BACKGROUNDS Technique can yield some artistic, creative and very beautiful results. Using several colors of ink, sponges, masks and the brayer, we are going to create this look of a leopard in the moonlight. Again, complete instructions can be found and downloaded HERE.

Mini Album - The Peanut Gallery

Yesterday I taught a great class on creating this little Mini Album. It was such fun watching everyone make and cover their mini books and then begin decorating. Creating the mini album is easy and fun and takes very little time. I will be posting a tutorial shortly. Decorating the mini album is really fun. Our table was full of scraps of patterned and solid colored papers and cardstock, lots of punch tools, stickers, ephemera, buttons, ribbons .. you name it, it was on the table. I hope you give it a try. Here are a few photos of the mini album I created called The Peanut Gallery for my little dog Peanut!

After making a few of the Shadow Box cards - whew! All that measuring and scoring and trying to get the box to come out perfectly even - there has to be a better way! Out to Steve's workshop I go, card in hand!

I am so happy to say, he came up with not only a solution but a fantastic solution! The Perfect Shadow Box Makers. They are sooooooooooo easy and not only that, you can make circles and ovals and rectangles and squares. I just had to play today with the oval and this is the card I created. The shadow boxes are so much fun. You can put items in the box, hang charms, oh the possibilities. I'll be doing more and showing them here as well.

Recessed Window Card

Something for the stampers today. Thought I would try my hand at creating a recessed window design card. I used the tutorial at SplitCoast Stampers.

I created the palm tree by punching out 5 scallop oval shapes. I folded them in half lengthwise, then used a bone folder to make the creases for the veins. I used the 1/2" circle punch to cut out the coconuts and cut the tree trunk by hand. The frame is embossed using the Big Shot and Stampin up's new embossing folder called Square Lattice. It gives a little bit of a wicker look. The recessed window gives the card a nice shadow box look. I hope you give it a try.

I created this fun page of my Dad, Lorna and I on Father's Day last year. We went to the Homosassa Wildlife Park, had a great time watching all the animals in a very natural habitat. We especially enjoyed "Lucifer", the famous hippo from many of the Tarzan movies. Lu is enjoying his retirement in sunny Florida!
